What do you do when your last kid goes off to college? Sell everything and go on a never-ending adventure. After raising two children and pouring their lives into their work and community, Rob and his wife are ready to hit the trails again; on foot and 4-wheels. Join us in this week’s Rig Spotlight, as we learn more about HikeItDirty and their purpose-built 2018 Toyota Tacoma.
We have dove the Bloody Bay Wall in the Cayman Islands, and backpacked the John Muir Trail (JMT). With our last kid off to college, we hope to enjoy time together exploring and adventuring before becoming grand parents. We sold our house, our vacation condo, a 1963 Chevy Nova Resto Mod and downsized into a simple apartment.
“Hike It Dirty” came from something we said almost every day on the JMT. It became our motto for not only the trail, but life. We would say it when something didn’t go as planned. To us, it reminds us that life is messy and at times you have to “embrace the suck”. Don’t get preoccupied with perfection, plans, and outcomes. Life is a collection of stories stitched together to illustrate your life – an adventure. Often life like adventures has pitfalls, challenges and, yes, even calamity. These challenges are the texture of life and define your character.
We have always loved backpacking and plan to do the Pacific Crest Trail (2,650 miles from Mexico to Canada) in early 2020. When we finish the trail, we want to continue exploring. We love camping but like to be far away from crowded campgrounds. Naturally, this led us to overlanding. It seemed like a perfect way to get outdoors, camp, and explore far away from the crowds. The Tacoma was the perfect platform. Inspired by several builds (Mike at Last Line of Defense, Max Powell, Jillian Rebekah, and several others), we began building our Tacoma. We found Saints Offroad in Glendora who understood our vision for the build, had everything we needed and a talented group to do all our modifications. The build can become an obsession at times. We have enjoyed the evolution and are now eager to get on the trail. We love Moab and are hoping to do a spring trip with a stop in Ouray, Colorado.
